THE
NATURE OF SPACETIME

Below,
I present an outline of ideas:
***
<2>
--
The objective world is four-dimensional, not three-dimensional.(1)
<3>
We
can distinguish between two different types of spacetime: Type I and Type II. In a Type I spacetime:
--
There is no "past-present-future" distinction.
--
All spacetime events (SE's) have the same existential
status.
--
All SE's are equally "present."
--
All SE's are real. (The past is still real; and the future is already
real.)(2)
<4>
In
a Type II spacetime:
--
There is no "past-present-future" distinction.
--
All SE's have the same existential status.(3)
--
No SE is ever "present."(4)
--
SE's exist as "quantum possibilities."(5)(6)
***
<5>
--
In order for a spacetime event, s1, to be real, s1
must possess the property of being "present." If s1 lacks "presentness," s1 is not real. -- If all spacetime events lack "presentness," all spacetime events
are unreal.

<6>
--
A Type I spacetime is not logically possible.(7) However, a Type II spacetime
*is* logically possible.(8)
Notes:
1.
In addition to the objective world, there is a subjective world (i.e., 3D
phenomenal space).
Each
mind perceives its own 3D, virtual reality.
2.
The spacetime of general relativity is "Type
I."
3.
Philosophers often claim that human "free will" is not possible in a Type I
spacetime. (See TA48 by V. Petkov [Karl Jaspers Forum]: <http://www.kjf.ca/48-TAPET.htm>.)
I
suggest that "free will" is possible in a Type II spacetime.
4.
The "present" is a subjective phenomenon associated with
consciousness.
5.
In a Type II universe, spacetime events are not
"real."
6.
In his book *Other Worlds*, Paul Davies questions the reality of the
unobserved, objective world.
In
the book, Davies considers both the "realist" and "Copenhagen" interpretations
of superspace. <http://deoxy.org/superspace.htm>
7.
The past cannot still be real. And the future cannot already be
real.
8.
Our 4D world is a Type II spacetime. (See [Time]
messages 13777 and 13780: <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/time/message/13777>, <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/time/message/13780>.
